As part of their new Conley Terminal Berth 10 project, Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) purchased three 22 container wide, low profile STS container handling cranes from ZPMC, with help from the Liftech team, also including McKay International Engineers, Leader Firm International, and Liftech Shanghai Limited. Two of the cranes are the tallest of this type of crane in the world.
Liftech performed studies to determine parameters for the new cranes and prepared crane preliminary design and procurement specifications. After award, Liftech provided full procurement services, including crane design review, manufacturing review in China, and transport review. Liftech also assisted Massport with commercial aspects of the crane procurement and collaborated closely throughout the project including crane receiving, commissioning, and acceptance at Massport.
McKay (now merged with Liftech) provided mechanical and electrical engineering services.
Leader Firm, a Shanghai-based inspection agency, provided manufacturing audit services at the ZPMC facilities. Liftech Shanghai Limited personnel helped coordinate the project with ZPMC and Leader Firm and monitor the manufacturing schedule.
Some key challenges that Liftech helped resolve included:
(1) crane geometry design for ship, wharf, and aircraft clearance limitations
(2) crane weight, interaction, and wheel loads for existing wharf girders and different rails, and inertial loading for large shifts in crane center of gravity due to the shuttling boom
(3) design and fabrication considerations for boom supports design and for boom camber and deflections for aircraft clearance
(4) design and associated requirements for two different crane lift heights, with provisions for raising the shorter crane
